A picture 3 feet across is hung in the center of a wall that is 19 feet wide. How many feet from the end of the wall is the nearest edge of the picture?

The wall is 19 feet wide and the picture is 3 feet wide, the uncovered parts of the wall total 16 feet in width. Since there is the same amount of empty space on each side of the picture, there is feet of space on each side of the picture.
Let be the distance in feet between an edge of the wall and the nearest edge of the picture. Since there are feet on both sides of picture, the total width of the wall is 2x + 3 feet. So 2x + 3 = 19 and therefore x = 8.
